Design Resources for Urban Bicycle Transportation

Many American cities are now implementing designs that reach beyond the guidance provided in the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, and the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

This sampling of resources highlights innovative solutions for urban bicycling facilities pioneered by these leading municipalities and agencies. While these practices have been successfully employed in cities around the world, this inventory is not a comprehensive summary of best practices nor a set of recommendations. If you have suggestions for additional resources to be included in this list, please email cycling@nacto.org.
